School’s out for summer! It’s time to celebrate with these super fun LAST DAY OF SCHOOL TRADITIONS.
The end of a school year is such an exciting time of year for kids! With the anticipation of summer, there is so much to look forward to… summer camps, pool days, family fun activites, no more homework, and more. The end of a school year is also a big accomplishment! Graduating from one grade to the next is a big deal and is something worth celebrating! These last day of school traditions are a great way to kick off summer and celebrate this huge accomplishment.
I hope you enjoy starting these LAST DAY OF SCHOOL TRADITIONS with your family!
1.SPECIAL Breakfast
Have an extra special breakfast to start off this exciting day! How about some homemade chocolate chip pancakes? Or some Pillsbury cinnamon rolls? What kind of celebration doesn’t involve a little sugar?
2. Classmate’s Autographs
As a kid, I remember being extremely excited to have all my classmates sign my school yearbook. Something about reading what your friends wrote to you was so fun and always meant so much! If your child doesn’t have a school year book, have them bring in another item for their classmates to sign. How about a t-shirt, a pillowcase, or a pair of white socks?
3.Last day of school picture
Documenting this monumental day is a must! It is the last day they will ever be in THIS GRADE! You will appreciate looking back at all the pictures over the years. It is also fun to compare their first day of school picture with their last day of school picture to see how they’ve changed. Try recreating the first day of school picture by standing in the same spot in the same pose to really see the changes! You will be surprised to see how one school year makes a difference!
4. Lunch Box Note
Write a special note and place it in your child’s lunch box. This will surely make them smile. Here is a link to hundreds of sweet lunch box notes and jokes!
5. Squirt gun/silly string Fight
Meet the neighbors at the bus stop and be ready to greet the kids when they come off the school bus with the ultimate squirt gun or silly string fight! They will surely get a kick out of it.
6. decorate the car
If your kids don’t ride a school bus, make the car pick-up extra special by decorating your car for the last day of school. You can use these chalk markers from Amazon to write on the windows. Write things such as “schools out for summer”, “last day of third grade”, “happy last day of school”, etc. Fill the car with fun balloons and streamers.
7. sidewalk Chalk Sign
Decorate the driveway and sidewalk leading up to your home with the same last day of school messages using chalk! Add a hopscotch for extra pizzazz!
8.Last day of school “interview”
“Interview” your child on the last day and see how much they’ve changed! Ask them basic questions like their favorite color, what they want to be when they grow up, who their best friend is, etc. Although you could write their answers down on paper, I would recommend videoing the interview. That way you can look back and remember their cute little voices and personalities through the years. You may think you’ll remember these small details about your child, but I’m sure as time passes it gets harder.
9. Ice Cream sundaes
Nothing screams summer more than ice cream! Make it a tradition to make ice cream sundaes on the last day of school! This is my personal favorite! Serve all the fun toppings including sprinkles, nuts, chocolate sauce, whip cream, and cherries!
10. Summer WorkBook
Get your kids excited to continue learning this summer by gifting them an educational workbook. This will help them keep their skills up as well as prep them for the upcoming school year. As a kid, I used to get so excited about my new summer workbook. I’m pretty sure there was some sort of reward for completing a certain amount of pages, which always helped. Here is a link to some great summer workbook options, as recommended by a homeschooling mom!
11. Tie-dye
Have a tie-dye party! A super easy and kid-friendly craft. They can wear their new tie-dye shirt all summer long. This tie-dye kit from Michaels comes with everything you will need!
12. Water balloon fight
Fill a large cooler with water balloons, gather all the neighborhood kids, and have a last day of school water balloon fight!
13. SPRINKLER PARTY
If you have a warm last day of school, put the sprinklers and slip ‘n slide out and have a ”splash into summer party”! Don’t forget to bring out the popsicles for a fun summer treat!
14. Backyard Campout
What better way to kick off the summer than with a backyard campout. Pitch a tent right in your own backyard! Grab your sleeping bags and flashlights, and sit around the firepit telling campfires stories while eating delicious s’mores. Maybe throw some of that old homework in the fire too haha
15. TEACHER GIFT
Of course, you can’t forget to show some appreciation for your teachers! They have worked so hard to help your child grow over the year. Have your child write them a heartfelt note or gift them a small token of appreciation like a gift card to their favorite coffee shop.
There you have it! 15 super fun last day of school traditions! These summer activites for kids will surely provide lots of family fun as you enter into the first day of summer! What are some of your last day of school traditions? I’d love to hear them in the comments!
p.s. I’ve always loved doing speical things for the last day of school. Here is a picture I found circa summer 2011… I had already graduated high school, but wanted to make these “happy summer” cupcakes for my brothers on their last day of school! I’m not sure they appreciated the creativity as much I did haha but I know they enjoyed eating the cupcakes!
